About Jonathan Franzen
Jonathan Franzen became a household name with the publication of his groundbreaking novel, The Corrections, in 2001. Initially known for his nonfiction work, Jonathan's essay in Harper's in 1996 highlighted his struggle with the declining cultural authority of the American novel. His perseverance paid off when The Corrections not only became an international bestseller, translated into 40 languages, but also won the National Book Award for fiction.
Following this success, his subsequent novel, Freedom, was declared a "masterpiece of American fiction" by the New York Times Book Review and topped the New York Times bestseller list. Freedom won numerous awards and was even endorsed by Oprah’s Book Club, leading to a highly publicised reconciliation between Jonathan and Oprah on her show.
Jonathan's other notable works include Purity and his latest project, A Key to All Mythologies, a trilogy that chronicles the life of a Midwestern family across three generations. The first book in the trilogy, Crossroads, was a national bestseller and was recognized as the Best Book of the Year by numerous prestigious entities, including Barack Obama and The New York Times.
In addition to his six novels, Jonathan has authored four collections of nonfiction, including the bestselling How to Be Alone and The End of the End of the Earth. His essays and short stories have appeared in top publications like The New Yorker and National Geographic, where his essay "What If We Stopped Pretending?" sparked widespread debate on climate change.
Jonathan's diverse accomplishments also include translations, co-editing literary anthologies, and executive producing a documentary. He has been honored with several awards and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2012 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019.
