Once upon a time in a Polish village in picturesque Bukovina, Romania, Hanka and Bronka are left alone by their deceased husbands and children who emigrated for work. Together, these two neighbours face everyday life with humour and persistence. Their lives are marked by the rhythm of changing seasons and the farm work for which they have less and less strength. However, their perseverance is inexhaustible. They live separately but in fact, they are inseparable. Sometimes annoyed but never bored with each other, they share joys and tears. They work together and walk together in the forest. They sing and pray, remember the past and wonder what the future will bring.
Fighting to stay independent, the women will soon need to make a life-changing decision. Is the world of these two lifelong friends coming to an end? A film about women and told by women, Double Trouble is a heartwarming lesson in the humble acceptance of fate. Creative cooperation with a local Romanian folk band, also present on the screen, gives the documentary a captivating colour of magical realism.
